Case Studies

ELS® Microemulsion and ELS® Concentrate

ELS® Microemulsion and ELS® Concentrate are soluble, easy‑to‑apply carbon substrates that create strong reducing conditions for the anaerobic treatment of chlorinated solvents. The case studies on this page show how both formulations support reliable subsurface delivery and effective groundwater remediation across different site conditions.

In Situ Chemical Reduction vs. Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination: Accelerated TCE Remediation at the Concord Naval Weapons Base, CA

This case study compares ISCR and ERD for treating a TCE plume in a highly aerobic aquifer at the Concord Naval Weapons Base. Both approaches supported effective reductive dechlorination, while ISCR—combining ELS® Microemulsion with zero‑valent iron—achieved faster TCE treatment under the site’s challenging conditions and maintained stable geochemical parameters. The optimized ISCR design reached near‑complete dechlorination in 155 days, helping accelerate cleanup within the BRAC program.
