Case Studies

METAFIX® Reagents

We’ve supported thousands of remediation projects worldwide involving heavy metals and chlorinated solvents. METAFIX® provides a reliable, cost‑effective way to stabilize contaminants in soil and mixed wastewater. These case studies show how METAFIX® Reagents reduce leachable metals to compliant levels, even at complex sites. EHC® Metals Reagent is now part of the METAFIX® portfolio, expanding our solutions for heavy‑metal treatment.

Mercury Treatment to Non-Detect Levels at a  Former Industrial Site in China with METAFIX® Reagent

This case study shows how METAFIX® enabled a safe, cost‑effective solution for managing mercury‑contaminated soil at a former chemical plant in China. Instead of relying on expensive excavation or complex treatment systems, the customer used METAFIX® to stabilize mercury directly in the soil, reducing leachable mercury to non‑detect levels with only a 0.5% dosage. This allowed the soil to meet landfill acceptance criteria and eliminated long‑term environmental risk. The approach delivered faster cleanup, predictable performance, and lower overall remediation costs — giving the site owner a clear path toward safe redevelopment of the property.

Treatability Study – METAFIX® Reagents Applied to Heavily Contaminated Soils in China for the Stabilization of Chromium (VI)

This case study highlights how METAFIX® Reagent successfully stabilized extremely high concentrations of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in soil, including samples containing approximately 3,000 mg/kg Cr(VI). A 3% METAFIX® dosage reduced Cr(VI) levels by three orders of magnitude, surpassing the remedial goal of 35 mg/kg and demonstrating strong performance even under natural subsurface conditions. The results show METAFIX® as a cost‑effective, environmentally friendly solution for chromium‑contaminated sites, supporting safe redevelopment of former industrial areas. This makes METAFIX® a powerful technology for Cr(VI) remediation, soil stabilization, and in‑situ chemical reduction.

Stabilization of Multiple Metals with use of MetaFix® Reagent at an Agricultural Site in China

This case study highlights how METAFIX® Reagent provides a powerful solution for restoring agricultural land impacted by complex mixtures of heavy metals, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and zinc. Even at elevated contamination levels, a 1% treatment dose delivered exceptional reductions in leachable metal concentrations after only seven days, supporting safer long‑term land use and improved ecological conditions. The field application confirmed that METAFIX® performs reliably at scale, offering a low‑impact, cost‑efficient technology for multi‑metal stabilization, soil remediation, and agricultural site rehabilitation.

Evaluation of METAFIX® Reagent Performance by Two Test Methods on Soils Heavily Contaminated with Arsenic

A lab treatability study was conducted to determine the optimal METAFIX® Reagent formulation and dosing rate to treat the highly contaminated soil samples with a total arsenic concentration of 21,700 mg/kg.

Co-Treatment of TCE and Chromium with EHC® Metals to Below Detection Limit in Groundwater

EHC® Metals Reagent is now a part of the METAFIX® portfolio of customizable reagents. EHC® Metals effectively treated TCE and immobilized Cr(VI) from groundwater to below detection limits at a manufacturing facility in Washington state.

EHC® Metals Injection for Lead Treatment at a Former Battery Recycling Facility in Brazil

EHC® Metals Reagent is now a part of the METAFIX® portfolio of customizable reagents. EHC® Metals Reagent has been shown to effectively immobilize lead (Pb) from groundwater at a former battery recycling facility in Brazil.

METAFIX® PRB Prevents Migration of Heavy Metals into an Adjacent River and Exceeds Remedial Goals

The main contaminant of concern, aluminum, has decreased from a baseline concentration of 1,530 μg/L to 224 μg/L after ten months, which is well below the remedial goal of 750 μg/L. Significant reductions also have been observed in dissolved arsenic and copper downgradient from the PRB.

Remediation of a Historic Chrome Residue Stockpile Site to Below Remedial Goals

An initial treatability test followed by field application demonstrated that a low dose of METAFIX® was successful in treating soils highly contaminated with chromium to below a stringent remedial goal of <1 mg/kg.
