We present methods of analysis for the determination of products with a peracetic acid content of more than 1% and the photometric determination for low concentrated peracetic acid products.

Determination of hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid content by titration

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE METHOD

The determination of hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid content by titration is preferably used for products with a peracetic acid content > 1% (e.g. PERACLEAN® 5 and PERACLEAN® 15). 

The determination of hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid concentration in peracetic acid products can be done in a two step titration. In the first step the hydrogen peroxide content is determined by titration with ceric sulfate under ice cooling in an acidic media. After the endpoint of this titration has been reached the peracetic acid content is determined in a second step via iodometric titration. 

For diluted solutions of PERACLEAN® either the titration method or qualitative or quantitative test stripes (for example from Merck KGaA or Chemetrics Inc.) can be used. 

For the online measurement peracetic acid specific sensors (for example from Prominent) are available at the market.

Photometric determination of low concentrated peracetic acid with ABTS

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE METHOD

The photometric determination of the peracetic acid content is preferably used for low concentrated peracetic acid products (e.g. PERACLEAN® 0.1 or PERACLEAN® 0.4). 

ABTS is oxidized selectively by peracetic acid to an intensely green radical cation. The extinction measured with a spectrophotometer is linear with the peracetic acid concentration in a range of 0.2 – 10 mg/l . The absorption spectrum allows measuring the extinction at different wavelengths. The preferred wavelength in this description is 405nm. For the measurement, a commercial spectrophotometer with a 405nm filter is required.
