Dan Leigh presented on emerging remediation strategies using ultra fine Zero Valent Iron (ZVI) to treat subsurface contamination. He explained how combining ZVI with organic reagents—such as Evonik’s ELS® and GEOFORM® Soluble—enhances the degradation of persistent chlorinated compounds through chemical, biological, and biogeochemical reductive pathways. The session also highlighted ZVI’s advantages over traditional iron additives, including broader distribution across sediment types and improved groundwater conditions for reductive treatment. |

Daniel Leigh of Evonik's soil and groundwater remediation group introduces the general design and analytical requirements for standard pilot tests with reductive reagents. Pilot testing is one of the best ways to verify the effectiveness of a remediation concept and can help refine the remediation concept prior to full-scale implementation. |

Brianna Desjardins and Brant Smith shared how our Environmental Solutions Laboratory supports remediation planning through targeted bench-scale testing. Their presentation covered typical evaluations conducted for reagents such as EHC®, ELS® Microemulsion, KLOZUR® persulfate, METAFIX®, and hydrogen peroxide. These tests play a vital role in shaping effective treatment strategies—helping to refine design parameters, identify potential challenges, meet regulatory standards, and validate remediation concepts before field implementation. |
