NICOLE & PROMISCES Joint Spring Workshop
The main topics of this year's NICOLE Spring Workshop in Frankfurt am Main are the development of solutions for newly emerging, persistent mobile industrial pollutants and the circular economy in the soil-sediment-water system.
The effects of climate change, increasingly scarce water resources and population growth pose growing challenges for sustainable land and water management. In the area of soil and groundwater remediation, too, the circular economy is helping to treat areas contaminated by pollutants effectively, economically and sustainably.
In her presentation, Josephine Molin, Technology Applications Manager, ISCO, Evonik Corporation, USA, will show how 1,4-dioxane treatment can be successfully achieved by applying chemical in situ oxidation with KLOZUR® activated persulfate. This has been successfully tested at two sites contaminated with a mixture of 1,4-dioxane, chlorinated ethenes and chlorinated ethanes.
The field data evaluated not only the treatment effectiveness but also the persistence of potassium persulfate under flow-through conditions in a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) setup. The field data indicates that the potassium persulfate persisted as expected based on observed groundwater flow velocities and temperatures. Performance monitoring showed a reduction of 1,4-dioxane, chlorinated ethenes, and chlorinated ethanes to below the limit of detection within the PRB. Significant reductions in groundwater concentrations were also observed downstream of the PRB over time.

Abstract

Persulfates
Persulfates are the most chemically active of the peroxygens with great utility in a variety of chemical processes. Our persulfates, backed by years of experience, are manufactured to strict specifications for thermal stability, making them the most stable available. ... MORE

Remediation of a former industrial site in New York State
We have used alkali-activated KLOZUR® KP to treat a contaminant plume containing 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated ethanes using an injected permeable reactive barrier (PRB). The results of laboratory and field tests showed a greater than 99% reduction in groundwater concentrations, often to below the limit of detection. It was observed that KLOZUR® KP and the activator of the lime hydrate persisted for longer than the planned 6 months. The destruction of 1,4-dioxane and dichloroethane illustrates the unique property of the alkali-activated KLOZUR® persulfate to treat contaminants by both oxidative and reductive pathways.

KLOZUR® Webinars
Our KLOZUR® webinars provide an overview of the technical effects and various applications of these persulfates, and cover a variety of topics on the science behind some of today's most innovative remediation treatments.
